Honouring a Canadian News Icon: Markham opens Lloyd Robertson Park
MARKHAM, ON — July 5, 2018 – On Saturday, July 7, the City of Markham officially opened Lloyd Robertson Park to honour a Canadian news icon.
As one of the most accomplished journalists in North America, Lloyd Roberston has been broadcasting for more than 50 years. According to his bio on CTV News, Lloyd joined the network in 1976 and held the title of CTV's Chief Anchor and Senior Editor since 1983 until he vacated his anchor chair in 2011. In 1998, he became a Member of the Order of Canada and in 2007, was the first journalist inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. To this day, Lloyd remains one of the most trusted faces in television news.
Canadians far and wide know him for his baritone delivery and signature sign-off, "And that's the kind of day it's been," but in the City of Markham, Lloyd is known for his work giving back to his community. Hosting some of Markham's biggest events, including Markham's Annual Santa Claus Parade and the City's dedication of Veterans Square and Cenotaph, Lloyd is cherished as a local hero in the City of Markham.
"This park is a place of sanctuary, a place to reflect and just like Lloyd did for Canadians over many years, spending time here is a chance to gain some perspective and build on our strong sense of community," says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "Let's honour the boy from Stratford who grew up to be the most trusted voice in Canada."
Thank you to those who joined us to honour a long-time Markham resident and his exceptional broadcast career.
